essay

I agree, companies should be able to hire whomever they want. In the article "Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination,"by Steven Greenhouse the author states that many companies have been hiring people based on looks and not experience. This is where it gets unclear and undetermined. Some people believe that companies are discriminating based on age, sex, race, or religion.  Are companies discriminating? Are they breaking the law? No it's just business. But a lot of people people believe they are, which results in government lawsuits. On one hand, companies are doing what is best for business. On the other hand, several people believe they are discriminating. In the article the author states "companies have been skirting the edges of anti discrimination" which means that they are right on the borderline of breaking the law, as long as they haven't broken the law let them do whatever they want. I've always believed that companies have the right to do whatever they want its their business, let them run it how they please. My conclusion, then, is that companies shouldn't have to deal with goverment lawsuits if people want a job they should work for it or look for another job it is plain and simple.

new article

GOING FOR THE LOOK, BUT RISKING DISCRIMINATION BY STEVEN GREENHOUSE. THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES ON JULY 13, 2007

In the article going for the look, but risking discrimination by Steven Greenhouse, the author states that  companies are skirting the edges of anti discrimination, which means that they are right on the borderline of breaking the law. For example, when companies hire people, they look for somebody that can represent their look, not for somebody with experience. That is where the conflict arises. Some people believe that the companies are discriminating based on age, sex, race, and religion. Are companies discriminating? Are they breaking the law? No, it's just business. But a lot of people believe they are, which results in government lawsuits. On one hand, companies are doing whats best for their business. On the other hand, several people believe they are being discriminatory.

What we learned today

Today we went over an old concept, the burden of clear writing rests on the writer.  That is the key for writing a good essay.

Wednesday, May 4, 2011

When companies hire people, they are looking for somebody that promotes their look. This is where the conflict arises, companies are discriminating on age, sex or ethnicity just by looking for an attractive person who promotes their look. Are companies discriminating? Are they breaking the law? No,they are just doing whats best for their business. But a lot of people are saying that they are discriminating, which falls back to the phrase "Skirting the edges of anti discrimination." Companies are doing whats best for their business, but by doing so they are also breaking the law which resorts to government lawsuits.

Alliteration- She sells sea shells by the seashore

Anecdote is when you insert a short story into an essay.

I like using the technique of parallelism because parallelism is easy, parallelism is fun and parallelism is a great technique to use in your essay.

Anecdote

While I was attending Cathedral City High School, something dumb happened in my fifth period history class.

Ms.Gonzales told the class that she would send anybody to ISS if she caught them  talking, while she was teaching. When we were doing our warm up, the kid next to me asked me for a pencil. I told him, "Naw man, this is the only pencil I have." Thats when I heard someone call out my name, it was Ms.Gonzlaes screaming at me, telling me, "Luis! why are you talking go to ISS." I tried to explain myself but she wouldn't listen.

Why didn't Ms.Gonzales want to listen to my explanation? Was it my fault? No, of course not. I was just answering a question that my friend had asked. Ms.Gonzales was sick of people talking thats why she didn't listen to me and overreacted.

I believe the company has the right to do what ever they want to make their company a success. They can hire who ever they believe is fit for the job, so if the company decides to hire people who project the companies image, thats their business. Each company has their own technique they use to enhance their business.

1. You have decided to invest your hard earned money and some money you have borrowed from your friends to open a clothing store. 1. What kind of clothes are you going to sell?
2. When people think of your store, what three words do you want them to think of?
3. What kind of people are you going to hire to work in your store?

In my store i would sell all types of clothes, for example pants, T-shirts, hats, shoes, etc...
The three words I want people to think of when my store comes to mind is cheap, good quality, and always in fashion.
I would want to hire people with experience in the fashion industry, a sense of humor, and great enthusiasm so my costumers will feel welcome.

In Timothy A. Hacsi's article, "Stop Waiting for a Savior," from the New York Times he argues that people should stop waiting for a savior that will hopefully change everything and turn schools around instead of actually doing something about it and trying to make the schools better. I believe that the best way to change a schools test scores is by giving them the correct resources they need.

In Bilger's essay "The Last Meow," he states that American spending on their pets has gotten out of control. I agree...

We learned how to use this template and three things that must go in the template,  identify the author, the text, and the opinion.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Today we learned how to properly use the templates and how to properly use the phrase "on the other hand." When using the phrase "on one hand," you have to follow it with "on the other hand." For example, on one hand, some Americans believe that they should treat their pets as family. On the other hand, some believe that they are just pets and should be treated as so.

To successfully make a college essay there are certain templates that you can use to start off in an essay and certain ways of addressing the topic. When writing the essay you have to find out your position in the argument and then decide which template to use for example of you agree with the writer but not completly  you can use this template, Although i agree with the writers opinion________ i cannot agree that _______ this template can come in handy when writing and argumental essay,

Comparing our essays with the one we went over, I think that ours wasn't as good as we thought. We missed a lot important points that we didn't go over in our essay. I didn't go over the importance of restating Bilger's essay and stating the opposing argument. But its always good that we learn from our mistakes so we can become better writers.

3/10/2011 Luis and juvenal's

When writing an essay you have to make sure that you don't write any awkward or incorrect sentences or paragraphs. So you do not cause the reader to get confused or lose his train of thought. A very important lesson we all should remember is the burden for clear writing rests on the writer.

Juvenal E. On Demand Writing Test

In Bilger's argument he seems to be shocked from all this money going into pets, and I disagree. I am glad that people are actually saving their pets and are willing to take care of them. Yes, pets can be very expensive when it comes to saving their life, but  I've always believed that pets are worth saving because they are part of your family. No one wants to see their pet laying on the floor close to dying. I would take my pet to a veterinary hospital, because I think of my pet as a brother and not just some animal.

Americans spending billions of dollars for veterinary care shows that we really love our pets. My cousin has had a German Shepard dog for five years. One day his dog had ran away from home and never came back. Days had passed and he had found his dog laying in the middle of the road, not breathing. My cousin was crying, and could of wished that he would of found her on the day she ran away. Dogs are mans best friend and this was one true friend for my cousin.

I understand that many people think of pets as just animals and nothing more. I used to think that to until I had gotten my own puppy. I've had him for three years, and if something would've happened to him, I would take him to a veterinary hospital. As I had said before, I think of my pet as a brother and I would go as far as I can to save him. Americans spending billions of dollars on veterinary care is worth it.

1. One of the main points that the author is trying to make is, how far would someone be willing to go to save their pets. Another main point that the author is trying to make is,  can a simple house pet actually replace a living human being.  For instance in this article the Leverings are using their pet cat Lady,  as the child they could never have. 67

2. In this article there is a lot of pathos because the author gives us a very descriptive image on whats going  like if its sad, happy, or awkward. For example, "Her eyes were rimmed with red, and her skin draped over her bones like an old rug," This sentence gave me an image of how the dog looked and made me feel sad and it  also made me feel sorry for the dog because of how the author described her.

3.

4. I think in this article, the author made pathos a lot stronger than logos. He gave this article a lot of feeling by being very descriptive in his article. He made us feel what they felt; sad, worried, and tense which made us want to keep reading the article.

5.I agree with most of the authors points,  for example are pets as important as family  can they be treated like surrogate children i think so,  i love my dog very much he is part of my family but i would rather put him down if he was in pain rather than putting him through pain staking hours surgery.

Author luis and juvenal

I trust the author Burkhard Bilger, because some of the articles he wrote are based on his experiences like hunting for coons, and noodling for catfish.

The clinic treated 6,028 animals in the first full year. Today we reviewed the use of topic sentences and holding hands. For example paragraph sixteen and seventeen were holding hands because in paragraph seventeen the first sentence refers back to paragraph 16,  which makes both paragraphs hold hands. We also went over topic sentences,  an example would be paragraph 16 which talks about the cartoonish image of clientele and  the rest of the paragraph talks about that topic and supports it

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

My reaction to the first part of the article made me feel sad because of how they describe the cat. I cant imagine how much pain the cat is in, and the owner for having to deal with the suffering of his cat. In the first few paragraphs of the article it shows the owners compassion for the cat because he has to take him to the city to try to help the cat. On top of all that he is a middle class man having to deal with the payments in exchange for the health of Lady but its all worth it because he loves his wife.

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Today we went over a number of things in the paragraph and reviewed the use of semi collins. The first thing we wont over was the vivid words that described the characters in the article, for example ravaged or ravishing described the cat Lady. The second thing we went over was contrast,  in paragraph two of the article, Shawn Levering was bewildered by the contrast between the city of New York and his home Wilmington Delaware. Also we learned the use of semi collins, it is used to make a list.

the last meow luis and juvenal

1. The title of our next essay is "The Last Meow." What do you think this essay will be about and why? In this pre-reading exercise, answer both these questions. Each answer should be at least 30 words.

2. How important are pets in your life and in the lives of the people you know?

1. Because of the title, we believe that the article is going to be about cats, and because it says "The last meow" we think the cat will meet his death somewhere in the article.

2. My dog is very important to me, and I think of him as  part of my family. We had him since he was a puppy and I don't know what I would do with out him. Simba will always be my best friend  and that's how important pets are in my life.

Drehle's main point

What is the main point that Drehle makes? Does the author of the student essay your are considering address that point? What do you think about his claims, especially in light of the quick poll that we took at the beginning of class? How does this affect the author's ethos (his or her integrity; how much faith we have in his argument)? How does this essay compare to Victor's essay?

Drehle's main point was that the summer slide is becoming a big problem for low income children and there is not enough summer enrichment programs.

The author doesn't address this point he just gives examples and reasons why people wouldn't attend summer enrichment programs.

I think he is mistaken, even though you would think nobody would be interested to go. A lot of people would like the opportunity to attend a summer enrichment program.

It affected him because half the class voted that they would go to a summer enrichment program if they had the chance,  which proved the statement he said incorrect.

In victors essay he is talking about his personal experience.

A letter purportedly signed by La Familia drug cartel announcing a one-month truce circulated Sunday in the western state of Michoacan. In the one-page message, distributed by e-mail and in some cities door by door, the gang claims it will halt all crime activity during January to demonstrate that the cartel "is not responsible for the criminal acts federal authorities are reporting to the media."Prosecutors have not verified the letter's authenticity, according to an employee of the Michoacan bureau of the federal Attorney General's Office who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The paragraph begins talking about a letter from the Drug Cartels. Then it continues on explaining what it says in the letter.
